Our history
A history of many people.
BBVA's history is that of many people who, from the middle of the 19th century, formed part of financial institutions that gradually unified to expand their business project.
Today, at BBVA, we work for a better life for people, looking for lasting relationships with customers that change the way of seeing the business. As a result of this work, BBVA has become a worldwide leader and one of the sector's most recognized and award-winning banks.
BBVA is firmly committed to the future and continues to adapt to the needs imposed by an increasingly global market. A history of a century and a half confirms this commitment
In Portugal, BBV was founded in June 1991, incorporating into its net worth all the assets and liabilities of the Portuguese branch of Lloyds Bank Plc and Bilbao Vizcaya, Sociedad de Inversiones, S.A.
Later, between 2000 and 2002, BBVA's activity in Portugal was characterized, fundamentally, by the incorporation and consolidation of several mergers: Argentaria, Crédit Lyonnais, Midas and the consumer division of the Banco Efisa.
